Update

Hello GHEC Middle and High School Families,

I hope that the holiday season went well for your family and that it was a good break for your GHEC student(s). During the first portion of the school year, we (and other school districts across the state) have noticed a difference in our student body from previous school years. Following the COVID-19 school closure in the spring of 2020, and the abnormal school year last year our teaching staff is experiencing a noticeable difference in attitudes and behavior during class. We have noticed a trend of student motivation decreasing, and disrespectful behavior increasing across our student body in whole. We met with our student leaders (student council members, class officers, and team captains) prior to Christmas break and discussed this trend, along with the possibility of losing quality staff members if this trend does not change. Our student leaders came up with the following suggestion:

Beginning January 3rd, 2021, the following items will be grounds for an immediate disciplinary referral:

  • Talking back to a teacher disrespectfully or in a negative tone.

  • Personal attacks made toward a teacher

  • Arguments/verbal fights with a teacher about instructions/class content/directions

None of us are perfect in our daily lives, and this change will not mean that students lose the ability to disagree with or discuss things with teachers. Interactions with adults in school do need to be respectful in nature and presented accordingly. We strongly believe that the quality of a school is directly related to having quality staff members providing quality educational experiences for our students. We are incredibly grateful to have a great group of teachers at GHEC, and we do not want to have any individual on our staff rethinking their careers because of the trend we are experiencing. Please have a conversation with your student(s) about how they are interacting with adults at school, and encourage them to be respectful towards all individuals they interact with on a daily basis.

Minnesota Student Survey

In late February students in grades 8th, 9th, and 11th grades are scheduled to participate in a statewide student survey used to gather information on health, safety, and academic success of youth in Minnesota. This survey is voluntary, confidential, and anonymous and a notice about this survey will be distributed to the students scheduled to participate as the date nears. The information gathered from this survey is a valuable tool for school districts, and county and state agencies in providing meaningful support to both students and families.

We are looking forward to a great start to 2022! Go Jaguars!
