Welcome to Middle School Genius Hour and FACS. Never heard of those two classes before, don’t worry, I’ll fill you in! Throughout your time in my classroom, I hope you find yourself learning different skills that will prepare you for the ‘real world’. You will be working hard to develop new skills and understand new concepts throughout the year. During this course, the first semester will be devoted to a project called “Genius Hour”, while the second semester will be devoted to Family Living. This syllabus will give you information about how to become a productive member of my classroom, so that you can be the best student you can be! I am looking forward to what we can accomplish this year.
Genius Hour (1st Semester)
Genius Hour will provide you the opportunity to research a topic or idea that you are passionate about. The number one reason Genius Hour is important is because you will take ownership in your own learning. This research is intended to spark curiosity and encourage lifelong learning, imagination, perseverance, self-awareness, and adaptability. It’s also intended to provide a sense of purpose for learning. You will first choose a project/topic of interest. After that, you will formulate a question that will guide your research. This question will be the driving force behind the whole project. Once the project is approved, you will then be given time in class to work on the project. When the project is complete, you will be asked to present your learning to an audience.
PARENTS - There are many ways that you can help your child be successful. Once your child chooses a project, he/she may need help with expanding his/her thinking to help formulate new ideas. Discussing your child’s ideas and providing some guidance as to where to find useful information will be important. If you have access to the Internet at home, your child could conduct some of the research there. Finally, you (yes, you) may be an expert in the area your child picks. If this is the case, it’s possible that you could offer some expertise and knowledge.
Family Living (2nd Semester)
Our semester on Family Living will lead students to explore the lives that they are living. We have a LOT to cover, so let me give you a brief overview. Students will dive into what makes a family, different jobs that students are interested in, how to budget their ‘income’ based on different family situations (for example: you make $60,000 a year and have 4 kids), creating weekly meal plans to accommodate for their families, and looking at different cooking strategies and techniques.
